Bariatric Counseling
Memorial Counseling Associates and the Bariatric Services Program at Memorial Medical Center have teamed up to prepare potential patients for surgery. Patients, who have been screened and are struggling with some psychological issues that could interfere with their success after surgery, are referred to Lois McConomy, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker at MCA.
Emotional eating or relationship issues can hamper a patient's success, so Ms. McConomy works with bariatric patients to help them learn to manage the impulse to eat and over eat. She also helps patients develop positive coping skills to manage stress through individual therapy and group therapy.
Ms. McConomy offers a group two times a month for 90 minutes. The participants talk about a variety of issues including handling relapse, getting out in public, perfectionism, procrastination, self-sabotage and relationships as well as identifying and coping with negative emotions.
